The CKC supports dangerous and/or vicious
dog legislation which would 'serve to
protect the public from dangerous dogs'
but the banning of specific breeds is
not considered to be an effective solution.
Like many interested parties we believe
that public education, stronger enforcement
of existing by-laws, and stiffer penalties
for owners is more effective than breed
specific legislation.
The CKC supports a position paper and
set of Sample Municipal By-Laws developed
by the National Companion Animal Coalition
(NCAC).
These documents were a collaborative
effort from the member organizations
of the NCAC including the Canadian Federation
of Humane Societies, Canadian Kennel
Club, Canadian Veterinary Medical Association,
Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council
of Canada, and Agriculture/Agrifood
Canada.
To deal with Breed Specific Legislation
in your area The CKC encourages you
to:
Review one or more of the various sites
on the internet dedicated to Breed Specific
Legislation.
Become a strong well educated lobby
group by identifying municipal meeting
dates, attending them, and requesting
time to speak. Further to this, contact
and solicit support from local politicians
and like minded individuals and organizations.
