| A
public rally to show support for the
Cameron's faithful friend ZEUS is to
be held in Country Harbor at the Community
Hall for this coming Tuesday May 24th
at 7 pm.
Warden Lloyd Hines has been forwarded
an invitation to attend same. Other
Guysborough County council members
have been invited as well.
Donation jars to assist this family
in their legal challenge against this
dogs death sentence will be in place.
ALL dog owners and supporters are
invited and any offer of support is
welcomed.
DLCC spoke with this responsible
dog owner, she explained that placing
Zeus is not an option since he suffers
from irritable bowel syndrome when
under going stress. At the ripe age
of 13 years, this move outside the
family
may kill him.She explained that they
only go on vacation if a family member
can come and stay with their dogs
just so that Zeus does not experience
another serious bout of IBS.
Mrs. Cameron further explained via
a telephone interview, that at the
time
of the ban on the "pit bull"
am staff, staffie bull approximately
ten years
ago, they could not allow themselves
to surrender their dog.
At the time, no one even knew they
could ask for a grand father clause
to
be written. Therefore to register
him (as they are law abiding people),
would ultimately mean his death.
This area has also seen fit to proscribe
against the rottweiler. No
incidences in this community have
been recorded against this breed of
dog
either. The DLCC along with several
other organizations and dog owners
spoke
at council during the public hearings
and yet all advice and offers for
support for dangerous dog bylaws to
be legislated were turned down.
Members of the DLCC witnessed council
members ignoring and or behaving in
an unprofessional manner amongst themselves
as, one after another
responsible dog owner stood up and
made the plea to not impose BSL against
them and their dogs.
They banned the rottweiler as well
as a "proactive measure".But
they did
however grand father in existing rottweilers.
Since ownership of Zeus ,these diligent
owners have taken all measures to
ensure he is socially a great dog
and have ensured that he never was
unsupervised nor off property unleashed.They
have had no fines nor warnings
about him or any of their other dogs. All
of the local residents in their
area have written to town council
giving this family their undivided
support
and have asked for compassion to be
given to this dogs plight.
NO RESPONSE from council other than
the motion from council to obtain
a
warrant for the dogs seizure.
During the daytime,Mr. Cameron,
who has recently undergone treatment
for
throat cancer,spends his days recovering
with Zeus and a new rescued mixed
breed of 8 months of age(hound mix).They
have recently found out,this pup
has entropy and requires surgical
intervention,they do not know how
they are
going to come up with the required
500 plus costs for doing this, but
she
assures me they will.
"He is family my dear"
she states."This is what families
do ."
This family has only one income, that
of Mrs. Cameron yet they do not meet
the criteria which would allow them
access to legal aid. They are not
going
to give up their Zeus and are quite
willing to go to jail for him.
"when they come for him they
are getting me instead!" Mrs.
Cameron told
DLCC President via the telephone.By
Jove she means it too!
All that they are asking is to allow
for Zeus to spend his remaining days
in his home. This council has the ability
to amend the regulations to allow
for grand fathering in remaining proscribed
dogs while preventing further
exemption for dogs of the proscribed
breeds in future. All they ask is
to be
able to live out their lives in peace.
To date this council with the exception
of one forthright member, ~ Mr.
MacLeod ~, have turned cold eyes and
hearts away from this dogs plight.
'Councillor Bradley MacLeod' is to
be commended for his stand against
his
fellow council members.
Please
write and ask this council to amend
their regulations to allow for existing
dogs to be exempt from their draconian
bylaws.
